JARRELL – The Hutto Hippos defeated the Harker Heights Knights Monday, May 1 to gain some extra momentum before starting playoffs.

The game came down to the wire with the Knights making a late push to try to win the game, but the Hippos’ defense stood tall and was able to secure the 7-6 win.

Offensively, the Hippos stuck to their norm throughout the game to pick up a crucial win late in the season. They remained consistent throughout the game and took what the Knights’ defense gave them and controlled the pace of the game.

The Knights scored the first run of the game to make it a 1-0 game after one inning, but the Hippos stayed the course. They would end up tying the game in the second inning before taking the lead in the third by scoring two runs.

The Hippos’ defense was also a major story in this game, as they shut down the Knights’ offense after the first inning, which helped their offense build and establish the lead as the game went along. The Hippos added two more runs in the fifth inning to make it a 5-1 game, and with the Knights running out of innings, the Hippos defense continued to apply pressure.

The Knights’ offense struggled to break through, and with the Hippos heading into the last inning, they needed to hold them off if they wanted to have a chance. The Hippos added another two runs to their lead in the top of the seventh inning to bring the score to 7-1, but the Knights still had life.

Late in the game, and with their backs against the wall, the Knights’ offense would finally break through the Hippos’ defense. The Knights scored five runs in the seventh, and after a mound visit from their coach, the Hippos would bear down, grit their teeth and get the final out to end the game before the Knights could even up the score.

The Hippos locked up second place after Monday’s win and they will look to use it as a springboard for momentum heading into playoffs.
