LAGO VISTA – The Granger Lady Lions have added yet another trophy to the case at Granger High School after capturing the bidistrict championship Monday.

The Lady Lions defeated the Johnson City Eagles two games to one in a three-game series to capture the title.

The Lady Lions took game one of the series by a score of 4-2 last Thursday, April 27, and it looked like they were about to run away with the series. The Eagles showed up to play in game two, which was also played Monday, and a late rally helped them edge out the Lady Lions 4-3.

With the series evened up and the final game of the series set to be played shortly after the game two loss, the Lady Lions knew they would have get going early in game three if they wanted to gum up the Eagles’ momentum.

The Lady Lions wanted to take care of the field before making an attempt offensively, and it was a big key to their success in game three. With the series and the bi-District championship the Lady Lions defense was locked in a ready to play.

They shut down the Eagles in game three, only allowing seven hits and three walks. Payton Filla was on the bump for the Lady Lions in game three, and she was a force to be reckoned with.

Filla pitched the full seven innings and struck out nine batters throughout the game. When the Eagles were able to make contact with one of Filla’s pitches, the defense that was behind her was able to shut it down and keep runners off the bases.

This would lead them to the fourth inning, when Mattie Wilkie get ahold of a pitch for a double. With one out on the board and a runner on second, the Eagles secured the second out quickly to put pressure on the Lady Lions offense.

Marissa Hall then stepped into the box, and with two outs on the board and a runner in scoring position, she delivered when her team needed her. Hall recorded a base hit that opened up the field for Wilkie to round third and head for home plate.

The Lady Lions opened the scoring with this play, and from this point on, the game looked to be fully in the Lady Lions’ favor. They added another score in the bottom of the sixth inning after three base hits in a row from Montana Moore, Wilkie and Marissa Luna.

The Lady Lions defense closed out the game to secure the bidistrict championship, but they know they still have work to do as the playoffs continue when they play Leon in the next round starting on Thursday, May 5 with a location to be announced.
