Lady Ducks' track coach rides into the sunset

BULLARD – The Lady Ducks team competed Regional Meet in and it was the last track meet Shelli Cobb will coach at Taylor High School. “My final track meet is in the books, and I was so happy to be able to share it with these amazing young women and my two fabulous assistant coaches, Kim Clifton and Jay Reed,” Cobb said.

“The girls ran hard but fell short of state qualification in a very tough region. They truly are great kids, and I will miss them all so much.”

The Lady Ducks 4x200-meter relay team of Kaleigh Woods, Azalie Balusek, Emma Whitsel and Zakaya Frederick with alternates Tessa Kopecky and Zari Thompson finished the race with a time of one minute and 50 seconds. Their time would land them in 13th place in the prelims and they were unable to qualify for state.

The Lady Ducks shifted their focus to enjoying their remaining time with their coach. Whitsel ran again for the Lady Ducks in the 100 hurdles, which was an event she fared well in all season long.

This was no different for Whitsel as she finished the race in 15 seconds to earn a fourthplace finish. Whitsel finished only three-tenths of a second from being in third place and qualifying for state.

At the end of the race, Cobb and the rest of the team embraced and shared a beautiful moment before going their separate ways. Cobb has been a staple of the Taylor track program coaching for many years and has even coached some of the parents of the athletes she has now.

“As I hang up my stopwatch, I want to thank all of the athletes I have had the pleasure of coaching and all of the coaches that I have had the pleasure to coach with or against,” Cobb said. “Farewell, and blessings to all.”
