HUTTO – The Granger Lady Lions’ late push sends them past the Johnson City Eagles during their playoff game Thursday, April 27.
The Lady Lions scored three runs in the sixth inning to put the game just out of reach for the Eagles to win their first playoff game of the season.
The Lady Lions were the visiting team in Thursday’s playoff game and saw an opportunity to be the first in the batter’s box. Marissa Luna stepped up to the plate with two runners on after Montana Moore hit a single and Mattie Wilkie was intentionally walked.
Luna hit a ground ball, and even though they were able to throw Luna out, Moore was able to score because of it to give the Lady Lions an early 1-0 lead. The Lady Lions scored three runs in the sixth inning to make it a 4-0 game.
Leading the way offensively for the Lady Lions was Clarissa Miller, who recorded two RBIs for the Lady Lions. Luna was also in the mix offensively for the Lady Lions, putting one RBI on the books as well as the only double for her team.
With the offense establishing a 4-0 lead late in the game, all eyes shifted to the Lady Lions’ defense and how they handled the final moments of the game. Payton Filla would then take over the game on the mound for the Lady Lions.
Filla and the defense locked down the field during the game, never allowing the Eagles’ offense to gain any traction to get back into the game. Filla walked only one batter while allowing eight hits and striking out 12 batters that she faced to help her team earn a playoff win.
Filla was pulled in the seventh inning with one out on the board because of pitch count reasons. Alex Harwell took over the mound for Filla, and even though there were two runs scored, Harwell and the Lady Lions defense got the job done and picked up a hug win.
In a double header, Granger dropped the first game 4-3 and wrapped up the series with a 2-0 win and advanced to the next round where they will face Leon (Jewett).
