PFLUGERVILLE – The Hutto Hippos developed a strong lead halfway through game two of their two-game series against the Pflugerville Weiss Wolves Tuesday, April 25, and rode that momentum all the way to a victory.

The Hippos relied on strong hitting and timely defense to take a 12-7 win as the season begins to wind down.

The Hippos had five batters post a 60% or higher batting average in Tuesday’s game helping them establish a large lead halfway through the game. Leading the way was Garet Boehm, who recorded a hit on three of his five at bat attempts, recording one RBI and the only double for the Hippos.

After falling behind 2-1 after the first inning, the Hippos would score three runs in the second to take a 4-2 lead into the third. The Hippos defense came up big during this stretch, only allowing the Wolves to score one run between the third and fifth inning.

This would allow the Hippos offense to stay in a rhythm and add more runs to their lead. The Hippos took full advantage of the situation and remained consist throughout the game.

The Hippos added three more runs in the fourth to make it a 7-2 ball game before the Wolves scored a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth to bring the score to 7-3. Hutto continued to pressure the Wolves with their steady and consistent offense, scoring two runs in the fifth and sixth inning.

Sitting with an 11-3 lead, the Hippos took the field for defense and the Wolves were ready to start a rally. The Wolves rally earned them four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the Hippos lead to 11-7.

The Hippos responded in the top of the seventh to make it 12-7, and took all the momentum from the Wolves’ offense.

At press time, Hutto had one game left at home against Midway (Waco), Friday April 28, which could slide the Hippos into first place in district.
