GRANGER – On Tuesday, April 25, the Granger Lions took on the Holland Hornets in a back-and-forth contest that came down to the wire with the Lions coming out on top.
The Granger Lions senior Nate Tucker smacked a ball over the fence to give the Lions a 11-10 victory over the Holland Hornets in the final game of the season.
The game started with the Lions taking an early 1-0 lead and capturing some early momentum. The Hornets responded in the top of the second, scoring three runs to take the lead away from the Lions.
Trailing 3-1, the Lions never panicked and remained calm as the game moved along. The Lions would score three runs in the bottom of the third to retake the lead 4-3.
The Hornets grabbed the lead again in the top of the fourth, scoring two runs to make it a 5-4 ball game. As stated earlier, this was a back-and-forth game, and in the bottom of the fourth, the Lions scored six runs to go up by five runs with a score of 10-5.
The Hornets’ defense would lock down the field from this point, scoring five runs between the fifth and sixth inning to tie the game up. The Hornets blanked the Lions on the scoreboard during this stretch and it almost swung the momentum in their favor, but as usual the Lions showed their resiliency.
Tucker waited for the perfect pitch before unloading a heavy swing that sent the ball towards the fence. After the ball landed on the other side of the fence, the crowd erupted, and the Lions dugout emptied as Tucker’s teammates threw water at him when he touched home plate to end the game.
Tucker led the team with three RBIs and in addition to his home run, also added a double to his stat line.
With the regular season wrapped up for the Lions, they will face district rivals Thrall in a play-in game Saturday, April 29 at Kruger Field in Taylor.
