HUTTO – Over 18 of the area’s active non-profit groups showed up at Adam Orgain Park April 15 for the Second Annual Community-Wide Appreciation Picnic The event was billed as a totally free event for the community, hosted by Community In Action Non-Profit Coalition.

“What’s really great is each of these organizations planned this event into their yearly budgets so that they were able to have something to offer the community without charge,” said Ed Wrinkle, post commander of the Richard A Oman American Legion Post 302.

Post 302 gave away grilled hot dogs and chips in the pavilion, while Legionairres gave out sunglasses at a booth. The City Parks Department gave out free kites that kids flew in the park. Hutto Fire Rescue was present with a fire engine for kids to explore, and gave safety talks to kids. Other groups provided bouncy houses, sodas, small toys, snow cones, games, face painting, coloring and crafts for kids.

The agencies represented a wide range of interests, including the food pantry, veterans groups, an organization supporting foster children, and a ministry dedicated to disrupting the demand for sex trafficking.

“We really just want the community to see what everyone has to offer, and the kind of resources that are available,” said Ida Weaver, whose booth was dedicated to promoting wildflowers. “Hopefully people will want to start volunteering more.”
