ACADEMY SPORTS + OUTDOORS ON ITS WAY TO HUTTO HUTTO – The announcement that Academy Sports + Outdoors will break ground this month on their new location was met with cheers from the audience at the April 6 City Council meeting.

Austin Alvis, president of NewQuest Properties, told council that the national chain hopes to open in Townwest Commons no later than next spring. The development is located on State Highway 79 between Ed Schmidt Boulevard and Alliance Boulevard.

According to a statement from the city April 6, Academy Sports + Outdoors is projected to initially generate at least $15 million a year in sales, bringing at least $225,000 a year to the city in sales tax revenue. Once stabilized, the store is estimated to reach $20 million a year in sales.

THE HUNT FOR FUN

Easter weekend was a time to hunt for fun in Taylor. On Saturday, April 8, the city and Frontier Bank hosted the annual Easter Egg Hunt in Heritage Square. With more than 10,000 eggs filled with candy and prizes, the park was filled with families there to hunt eggs and meet the Easter Bunny.

On Easter, Sunday, April 9, the two different Easter bunnies visited Fannie Robinson Park for the 10th annual Hood Hunt hosted by the Braided Faded Crew. The event had egg hunts for all ages from infants to adults. Dominic Linton was the big winner finding the golden egg with a cash prize.

TSTC STUDENTS, ALUMNI MEET PROSPECTIVE EMPLOYEES AT JOB FAIR HUTTO – Several students from Texas State Technical College’s East Williamson County campus attended the Spring 2023 Industry Job Fair Tuesday, March 21, at TSTC’s Waco campus.

The event was spread out across the Waco campus to include the Col. James T. Connally Aerospace Center, the Industrial Technology Center, and the Murray Watson Jr. Student Recreation Center. More than 200 companies were represented at the event, making it the largest jobs event the college has ever hosted.

Students lingered at company tables, talking to representatives while also picking up the occasional pieces of candy or branded stress toys and brochures.

Jonathan Garcia, of Austin, is scheduled to graduate in May from the HVAC Technology program. He has attended past industry events in Waco and said he leaves impressed every time.

“I am close to graduating, so I thought it would be the best time to come to the job fair,” he said. “I have some job offers already, but I wanted to see what other opportunities there are.”
