AZLE – The St. Mary’s Rams High School golf team traveled to Azle, this past Tuesday to compete in the Texas Christian Athletic Fellowship at the Cross Timbers Golf Course.
With drivers, irons, wedges and putters, the Rams stepped into the tee box and went bird watching being on the lookout for birdies and eagles.
The Rams were well represented by both a girls’ and boys’ team. The 18-hole golf course was very long and narrow in several areas. The terrain was hilly and had water hazards, sand traps and lots of big, beautiful trees to contend with on each hole.
The greens were fast and smooth, which could make it difficult to sink crucial putts. Rams’ coach Rick Cobia said players partnered with each other to make it a little easier to read the greens.
“The kids partnered with other teams and were able to compete with kids from all over the state” Cobia said. “Each member of our golf team did a fantastic job representing St. Mary’s as fierce competitors with a tremendous effort with each swing of their golf club. We just asked our kids to give their best effort, because their best effort is good enough, and they did a great job throughout the day.”
The girls team members are freshmen Leah Altman, Mercy Barta and Sydney Zimmerhanzel. Barta finished with a fifth-place state medal as an individualist.
The boys team members are junior Brady Altman, and sophomores Kolbe Barta and David Pena. Brady Altman finished with a third-place state medal as an individualist.
Cobia is assisted by Traci Zimmerhanzel.
