The Taylor Ducks boys and girls track team competed at the District 22-4A Track Meet at Taylor High School and they walked away with a couple of district championship wins.
The Ducks also had multiple athletes qualify for the area meet, putting them one step closer to the state championship.
The Lady Ducks had multiple teams run at the district meet, and Emma Whitsel took first place and the district championship in the 100-meter hurdles. Whitsel also came in second place in the 100, which allowed her to qualify for the area meet in both races.
Whitsel then joined the 4x200 relay team with Keleigh Woods, Azalie Balusek and Zakaya Frederick. This team captured another district championship for the Ducks, which, again, qualified them for the area meet.
Adding to the Ducks trophy case, the boys 4x100 relay captured a third district championship for their team. The team of Kayden Land, Jackson Meller, Andrias “Tutu” Fisher and Jarvis Anderson took the meet by storm dominating the field and easily claiming first place.
Though winning a district championship is a grand achievement, the Lady Ducks had athletes who did not win the district championship in their respective events, but still qualify for the area meet. Camryn Nunamaker and Krista Randig competed in both the shot put and discus events and were able to qualify for the area meet.
Nunamaker placed fourth in the shot-put while Randig took fourth in the discus. Though this is her last district track meet, the head girls’ track coach Shelli Cobb said she is so proud of her group and how much they have improved this season.
“Super proud of how far these young ladies have come this season. We saw almost every single athlete (have personal records) today in their events.” Cobb said. “It felt weird knowing that this would be my last district track meet to coach in my career. Saying good-bye is very hard, but my girls competed so well. I am so happy for our area qualifiers, as well who are moving on.”
The area meet will be held in La Grange Friday, April 21, where the Ducks look to extend their time with their longtime coach.
