Rylan West, a Thrall High School sophomore, earned overall grand champion at Rodeo Austin’s Youth Art Show on Feb. 11 at the Palmer Events Center in Austin. Rylan’s digital Photoshop composition of a bronc rider competed against 250 entries from across Texas to win grand champion honors.
Thirteen of West’s classmates in Christina Strnad’s Graphic Design II class also showcased their digital art and photography at the show. In the Digital Art category, Peyton Zeplin placed third and Alicia Dietrich placed fourth. Rochelle Malish placed eighth in the photography division. Each student earned scholarship money when their art was sold at auction.
Rodeo Austin’s annual Youth Art Show featured original artwork across four categories — Traditional, Photography, Digital Art and Sculpture/3-D. Students were encouraged to create original art that reflects the education and appreciation of Western or Texas heritage.
The overall grand and reserve champion and grand and reserve champions in each category went into the live auction during Rodeo Austin’s Gala and Youth Art Auction on Saturday, Feb. 12. The other placing art pieces went into the silent auction.
