HUTTO – The Hutto Hippos captured their third district win after defeating the Temple Wildcats, and now comfortably sit in a playoff spot.
The Hippos defeated the Wildcats 5-3 in a close game at home, but they were able to bare down and come away with a victory.
The Hippos’ defense was the first to take the field. Knowing the magnitude of the game they needed to start off firing on all cylinders. The Hippos’ defense would hold the Wildcats to a scoreless first inning, setting themselves up in a good offensive position to start the game.
Hutto got the home crowd fans into the game early, scoring two runs to put themselves in the driver’s seat.
Now with a 2-0 lead, the Hippos’ fans rallied around their home team’s defense as they wanted to get off the field and back in the batter’s box to add more runs to their lead. Unfortunately, the Wildcats had other ideas of how the game was going to go.
Temple responded with two runs of their own in the second inning to tie up the game and quiet the Hippos’ fans. The defense for both teams stepped up in a big way, not allowing a single run until the sixth inning.
The Wildcats would come into the sixth inning looking to break the tie and did exactly that. Temple scored a run and put pressure on the Hippos offense, but the Hippos crowd was ready to will their team to victory.
Sensing the team needed a spark, the Hippos faithful began to buzz again. The Hippos offense fed off of this energy and started to put a rally together.
The Hippos scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 5-3 lead into the last inning of the game. The pressure Temple put on Hutto was now flipped back to the Wildcats.
The Hippos defense sensed it was time to make a stand to close out the game for their team and capture their third win on the district season. The defense made that stand, a pulled out the victory.
With the big win under their belt, the Hippos prepared to host Copperas Cove on Friday, April 7.
