Taylor Duck athletics is looking to soar even higher under the guidance of new athletic director Earven Flowers.

Flowers, a former Division I football player at the University of Kentucky, has been on the Ducks sideline since 2018 and will now take over as athletic director and head football coach.

“We’re going to look out for all our kids, for all sports,” Flowers said. “We’re going to do everything we can to get the maximum potential out of everyone. We’re going to do everything we can to do that.”

He said he preaches “commit to the T on your chest” as a line of motivation for players.

“It’s Taylor first, and it’s all about that. Have that championship mindset,” he said. “That’s every sport. That’s what we’re going to really preach and get out of these kids.”

Flowers will take over for Brandon Houston, who resigned in March after two years in the position. Flowers now steps into Houston’s position to begin a new era in Taylor.

“It’s one of those things that’s kind of hard to explain,” Flowers said about being named to the position. “You put in the work for so many years, then to finally get your opportunity to be at the top, and lead the way you want to lead and put things in the direction you want them to go, it’s nothing you can describe. I’m just so excited.”

Flowers served as defensive coordinator under Houston. Now as AD, Flowers expects his biggest challenge to be the director duties.

“It’s foreign. It’s new to me,” Flowers said. “Ball is ball, so we’re going to get these kids ready to go, and we’re going to make sure it’s organized. And, we’re going to make sure that we’re all on the same page, and we’re going to be fine.”

Board members congratulated Flowers from the dais as he walked through and shook each members hand.

“We’re behind you. We know you’re going to do great things for Taylor as head coach and AD,” said Shorty Mitchell, board vice president. “You’re already a proven commodity in the community ... This is history in Taylor ISD as far as I’m concerned. It’s well deserved.”
