GRANGER – The Granger Lady Lions are now enjoying a five-game winning streak after defeating the Milano Eagles Friday, March 31, on their home field.
The Lady Lions would get an early 2-0 lead, then looked to junior pitcher Payton Filla to close out the game.
The Lady Lions defense would also dominate the game helping Filla out whenever the Eagles were able to hit a ball. Filla would pitch all seven innings for the Lady Lions, only allowing four hits while walking two batters and then striking out 13.
The Eagles batted first, and after facing Filla and her skills, knew they were going to be in for a tough one. The Eagles defense made a stand, but early in the second inning, the Lady Lions found the spark they needed.
The Lady Lions were feeding off the energy from their home crowd fans as they began to buzz after two strong defensive showings. The Lady Lions would step into the batter’s box ready to put runs on the board.
Gabby Ramirez was up first, and while she made contact with the ball and put it in play, the Eagles scooped it up easily for the first out. Next, was Abigail Crouch, who made her way to first base after being walked by the Eagles.
Ariana Herrera would then lay down a bunt that not only landed her on first base, but also advanced Crouch to second base. The next Lady Lion would strikeout at the plate, giving the Eagles some life late in the inning, but the Lady Lions were determined to do something with runners on base.
Montana Moore was walked to load up the bases and apply pressure to the Eagles pitcher. Marissa Hall was next up for the Lady Lions, and she was also walked to bring a run home to give the Lady Lions a 1-0 lead.
Marissa Luna would then be walked to bring home yet another run, before the Eagles struck out another batter to end the inning. The two teams engaged in a battle of the defenses, as Filla and the Lady Lions continued to stonewall the Eagles defense.
The Lady Lions defense would get the final out of the second inning where they begin to celebrate the accomplishment of the win and also celebrate what their pitcher accomplished on the mound.
Currently at 6-3 in district play, the Lady Lions now look forward to their matchup against Bremond where they will look to climb up the district rankings.
