I moved here searching for a place to call home. I wanted to leave city life and move to a place where I could get to know my neighbors and participate in community building. The rainbow ducks I saw gave me hope that Taylor was a progressive, safe place for my family (even though we would probably be the only Jewish family in town).
When I moved here Taylor Pride was the only secular organization that aligned with my world view of coexistence and tolerance. I could practice Tikkun Olam in my own community. Due to this, my encounters with “Christians” has increased. I’ve experienced grown men harassing families trying to watch a movie at the library. I have been filmed without my consent. I’ve been falsely called a groomer, pedophile and child abuser for my works to create legal, secular and accepting family friendly spaces.
I understand that the group’s mission is not against Jews. Jews are just a casualty in their terror tactics. Last year, was the first year I was able to participate in the holiday parade. Jews celebrate Hanukkah and not Christmas. I was excited to share my culture with the community.
My heart broke when I read the application that stated only “Traditional Biblical Values” were to be celebrated in the town sponsored parade. Hanukkah isn’t a “Biblical” event. Hanukkah is a cultural holiday celebrating a historical event in Jewish history. This is the closest I have come to a “ Jews need not apply” sign in my life.
I am not trying to change beliefs in Taylor. I just want a safe place to raise my family and live out the American dream. We can coexist. We can respect that everyone has the right to a life, liberty and freedom from fear without sacrificing beliefs. Shirley Shumaker Taylor, TX
