HUTTO – The Hutto Hippos baseball team picked up their first district win of the season Friday, March 24, after beating the Harker Heights Knights 11-9 on their home field.

The Hippos and Knights always have a little extra gas added when they matchup athletically because it is a big rivalry, but the Hippos came away with the win this time.

The game started with the Knights getting on the board early, jumping out to a 1-0 lead over the Hippos. The Hippos were on their home field and responded immediately with three runs to give them the lead heading into the second.

Not to be outdone in a game against a rival, Harker Heights came back with a counter punch of their own. The Knights would score four runs in the top of the second to make it a 5-3 ball game.

The Hippos scored one run in the second to cut the lead to 5-4. Then in the third, the Hippos would tie things up at five runs each.

The Knights responded with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. With an 8-5 lead, the Knights looked to shut down the field on defense.

The Knights added another run to their lead in the fifth to make the score 9-5.

The Hippos continued to chip away at the Knights lead and scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to come within striking distance.

It was at this point the Hippos defense shut the field down, not allowing another run. The Hippos would also remain consistent on offense as they scored two runs in each the sixth and seventh inning to close out the game.

Hutto took the win in game and prepared to travel to Killeen to face Harker Heights on their home field Tuesday, March 28.
