Big second inning lifts Granger past Thrall

GRANGER – Montana Moore and Alex Harwell each drove in a pair of runs, and the Granger Lady Lions erupted for six runs in the second inning, then held on for a 7-5 win over the Thrall Tigerettes. Thrall was first to get on the board with a run in the top of the first.

Thrall was first to get on the board with a run in the top of the first. Neveah Irvin hit a one-out triple to center and, she scored on Raelynn’s double to right for a 1-0 lead.

In the second inning, the Lady Lions’ bats took control of the game. Marissa Luna led off the Granger second and reached on an error. Payton Filla, Mattie Wilkie, Gabby Ramirez and Harwell followed with consecutive singles that accounted for three Granger runs. With two outs, Moore added a pair of runs on a triple to right, and Marissa Hall finished off the scoring with a sacrifice fly to right that scored Moore and gave the Lady Lions a 6-1 lead after two.

The Tigerettes got one of those runs back in the third, but Granger regained it’s five-run lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth.

Thrall made one final push in the sixth inning, with the Tigerettes scoring three runs to trim the lead to 7-5. But, that would be as close as they would get.

Harwell and Filla led the Lady Lions with a pair of hits each. Mikayla Velesquez and Johnson led the Tigerettes with two hits each. Miley Pokorny drove in a pair of runs for Thrall as well. Filla picked up the win for Granger after scattering seven hits over seven innings and allowing five runs, while striking out six. Pokorny took the loss, surrendering seven runs on seven hits over six innings.

Thrall returns to action Tuesday when they travel to Bartlett to face the Lassies. Currently, the Tigerettes are in fifth place, one half game behind the Lady Lions.
