HUTTO – A come from behind win in a highscoring game moved the Hutto Lady Hippos up in the district stands.

The Lady Hippos picked up their second district win of the season on home field Tuesday night after defeating the Copperas Cove Bulldawgs.

The Lady Hippos and Bulldwags offenses came to play Tuesday night, as the two teams scored a total of 38 runs in the game with the Lady Hippos scoring 21 of them to come away with a win.

The Lady Hippos as they had to fight back from an early deficit in the game. Heading into the second inning the Lady Hippos were down on the scoreboard 11-0 and staring down the possibility of being mercy ruled and ending the game early, the Lady Hippos began to rally.

Hailee Sanchez would be a big part of the Lady Hippos offense and rallies throughout the game. Sanchez would have four at bats in the game hitting on three of them.

Sanchez hits included a double and a home run for her team. Sanchez would also end the game with seven RBIs, which was a major piece to the Lady Hippos’ comeback.

Hutto would go on to score seven runs in the bottom of the second, to bring the game to 11-7 heading into the third. The big second inning saved the game for the Lady Hippos, because what happened next some might call “magical.”

Down 11-7, the Lady Hippos defense took the field trying to stop the Bulldawgs momentum on offense and keep them within striking distance. When they secured the first out, fans could feel the momentum shift, and the Lady Hippos were buzzing.

They secured the second and third out with ease, sending the Lady Hippos back on offense where it was their turn to run away with the score. Scoring five runs in the bottom of the third, the Lady Hippos were finally able to complete the climb up the mountain, taking the lead 12-11, but with a lot of ball left to play, the Bulldawgs responded.

The Bulldawgs scored three runs in the top of the fourth while the Lady Hippos would only score one in the bottom of the fourth to retake the lead and carry a 14-13 lead into the fifth. The two teams continued to slug it out as the Bulldawgs scored another three runs, but this time the Lady Hippos countered with four runs leaving the game tied at 17-17.

With the pressure on at the top of the sixth, Hutto’s defense again stepped up in a major way, holding the Bulldawgs scoreless to set their offense to retake the lead to try to close out the game. When the Lady Hippos went back on offense, they knew what they needed to do to come away with a win, and did exactly that.

Scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth and holding a 21-17 lead, the Lady Hippos sat only three outs away from victory, and again their defense stepped up. Securing the final three outs of the game, the Lady Hippos began to celebrate their comeback victory as they now sit comfortably in third place in the district.

With the big comeback win under their belt, the Lady Hippos got back to work Friday, March 24, on the road against Bryan.
