WACO – The Taylor Lady Ducks traveled to Waco La Vega to compete in the George Dixon Relays on Friday, March 17.

The Lady Ducks had more than just the spirit of competition to deal with Friday as they were also fighting the cold weather throughout the relays.

In addition to the cold weather, the Lady Ducks were also shorthanded at the meet with some athletes being unavailable because of Spring Break. Despite the odds not being in their favor, head track coach Shelli Cobb was very proud of her group.

“Conditions were not great for a track meet, and we were shorthanded due to Spring Break, but my small little group of girls competed hard against some very tough Waco area competition,” Cobb said.

In the 4x100-meter relay, the team of Kaleigh Woods, Azalie Balusek, Emma Whitsel and Zakaya Frederick lined up for the Lady Ducks. They finished the race in 53 seconds, which would earn them seventh place to start the meet.

Next was the 800meter run, and Lily Vega slotted into that race for the Lady Ducks where she would finish in sixth place. Vega finished her race in two minutes and 48 seconds to earn her spot just outside the top five.

In the 100-meter hurdles, Whitsel would make her presence known again. Whitsel has been a great runner for the Lady Ducks in the hurdles event and Friday was no different.

Whitsel finished the race in 15 seconds to earn the second-place spot on the leaderboard. Before enjoying her efforts in the hurdles, Whitsel was back on the track ready for another relay race.

Woods, Balusek, Whitsel and Frederick would again take over relay team duties in the 4x200-meter where they finished the race in one minute and 53 seconds. Their efforts earned them sixth place as well as a well-deserved rest for the remainder of the meet.

In the 400-meter, Zari Thompson took ninth, while in the 1600-meter, Vega took home fifth.

With this meet in the rear view for the Lady Ducks, they look ahead to Thursday, March 23, when they will travel to Burnet for their next meet.
