Get ready to climb into those emergency vehicles, and maybe, if we are lucky, honk some of their horns.
Spring break is almost upon us, March 13-17, and for parents not knowing what to do with their kiddos, the Taylor Public Library has got you covered.
“We do this every year, except for COVID,” said Library Director Karen Ellis. “We try to keep the kids busy when they are out of school.”
From Monday through Friday next week, the library, in cooperation with the Friends of the Taylor Public Library, will host a variety of free afternoon family activities, from stress-ball crafting for teens and tweens to sand art to a screening of Lyle, Lyle the Crocodile.
Ellis said the Friends of the Library is helping to fund and staff some of these activities.
“The Friends are probably going to volunteer for the staffintensive things, like the Maker Faire, where we have different crafts or activities for the kids to do, and just kind of go around the room and work on things,” Ellis said.
But the showstopper, as usual, will be the Truck Petting Zoo from 2 –3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 16, in library’s parking lot.
“I must emphasize, so many times, there are no animals involved,” Ellis said. “I put out signs saying, ‘No animals,’ but every year, someone asks.”
Instead, visitors are likely to see and interact with emergency vehicles, tractors, backhoes and possibly a school bus or two, among other vehicular lures, Ellis said.
“I am talking about the dump trucks, the police vehicles,” Ellis said. “We have reached out to CARTS (Capital Area Rural Transportation System) … I don’t know what the whole list really is at this point, but we should have a healthy collection of things that go on wheels.”
Ellis said there will be many photo opportunities for families.
“It’s just a fun time to come and wander around, and maybe they will let you honk,” Ellis said. “I know the neighbors really love it when we do that.”
