AUSTIN — As the 88th legislative session kicks into high gear, students from Granger Independent School District got to be in the middle of the action last week.
On Wednesday. March 8, Granger ISD Superintendent Jeni Neatherlin brought a small delegation of students who were invited to share their testimony at the Texas Capitol on behalf of the Senate Bill 68 and House Bill 131, which would allow students to take Career Shadowing Days in lieu of College Days for excused absences.
Neatherlin said this is an important issue for all students in the state.
“As the Superintendent, I advocated for this when I was the high school Principal of Llano, which Representative Andrew Murr put to a bill,” she said in a written statement. “It failed to make it to law last session, so we are trying again with companion bills in the House and the Senate. Yesterday, our kids also met with House Chair Representative Dr. Brad Buckley, who listened to their voices. He was gracious with his time and energy with our kids.”
Neatherlin said her students performed well and impressed state lawmakers.
“(State) Senator Brandon Creighton said that Granger was well represented at the hearing, and we are excited to represent and advocate for students all around the state of Texas,” she said.
