GRANGER – The Granger Lady Lions basketball season was memorable for the players, coaches and fans, but it is about to get better.
In addition to the Lady Lions making the playoffs after everyone counted them out, they also had a couple of players make the all-district teams.
Starting off for the Lady Lions, senior Mattie Wilkie who was named to the first all-district team.
As one of the few seniors on the team, Wilkie was looked at as a leader by her teammates and was the voice of the locker room. She was a consistent scorer for the Lady Lions, and also helped the coaches teach the game to younger players.
Whenever the Lady Lions were on a roll on the court, Wilkie was in the middle of it all and her teammates fed off of her energy. Lady Lions junior Montana Moore and sophomores Marissa Hall and Sofia Bernal were some of the players that fed off of Wilkie’s leadership and energy and it paid off as the trio made second-team alldistrict.
Moore, Hall and Bernal were the motor behind Wilkie and really settled into their roles as the season progressed.
Whenever the Lady Lions forced a turnover, Moore and Hall were usually the ones causing issues for opposing offenses.
Meanwhile, Bernal solidified herself as a very viable three-point shooter for the young team. No matter the point deficit was with Bernal on the floor, the Lady Lions always had a chance to get themselves right back into the game.
In addition to the four players making the first and second all-district teams, the Lady Lions had some honorable mentions. Senior Gabby Ramirez, junior Destiny Cotten and freshman Abi couch, Victoria Castillo and Lexi Montagnino were all honorable mentions for the all-district rosters.
All of the players listed here played for each other to achieve a common goal, and that passion and competition earned them all a spot in the all-district honors.
