School still mulling makeup days

The ice storm and electricity outages caused area school districts to shut down for a few days. Some schools have to have makeup days, while others don’t.

According to Taylor Independent School District Administrative Assistant Vicki Roth, Taylor’s calendar already has enough instructional minutes built in to allow for four days of closure.

“TEA (Texas Education Agency) has provided a waiver for two of those days. At this point, we are proceeding with the rest of the school year as planned,” Devin Padavil, Taylor ISD superintendent.

In Thrall, Superintendent Tommy Hooker said they have decided to delay making a decision on making up the ice days, bad weather as identified by district calendar, to see if there is a need due to more weather delays.

“At this time, the only planned student holiday that could be used as a makeup is Monday, April 10,” Hooker said. “Currently, our days in Thrall are significantly longer than

Photo by Ann Miller than many districts, therefore the new law approved by legislatures in 2021 requires minutes over days and we are meeting our requirement for time. There will be a final decision made by spring break.”

Jeni Neatherlin, Granger ISD superintendent, said Friday, March 10 is the only day allocated as a makeup day for Granger ISD. March 10 was scheduled as a half day but is now extended to a full day. District officials will determine needs for a second makeup day at a later date. If another day is needed, it will be Friday, May 26.

In Hutto ISD, Superintendent Celina Estrada Thomas said they will make up two of the four days missed, Friday, March 10 and Friday, April 14. Thomas said, “Both of these days were slated as bad weather days on our school calendar,” she said. “One day will be made up with banked instructional minutes and we will submit a TEA waiver for the fourth day missed.”
