THS band student advances to State

Taylor High School saxophone player, Kenny Calvo, has advanced to the 4A All-State Band. To reach the All-State level, he had to compete in a regional competition and then in an area competition. He is one of only five highschool saxophone players state-wide to have been chosen for the All-State honor.

Taylor High School saxophone player, Kenny Calvo, has advanced to the 4A All-State Band. To reach the All-State level, he had to compete in a regional competition and then in an area competition. He is one of only five highschool saxophone players state-wide to have been chosen for the All-State honor.

“I am very excited to be in [the] state band,” said Calvo. “It was a nice surprise when I found out.

The directors found out first, and I was looking at the results with one of the directors, when she refreshed the page and said, ‘It looks like the alto saxophones are up.’ She let me look at it first and when I saw it, I couldn’t believe it. I kept saying, ‘no way, no way’.”

Calvo attributes his success to tons of practice and help from his directors.

Each year of highschool posed an opportunity for him to advance into the All-State band.

He is also involved in the National Honor Society, UIL Spelling, THS’s Academic Decathlon team, Cross Country, and even a summer internship with Samsung.

“Kenny has always been a hard-working, dedicated band member,” said THS Band Director David Motl.

“His success in competitions is due to strong work ethic and self-motivation.

We are extremely proud of his accomplishments,” shared Motl.

During Calvo’s time in the All-State Band Feb. 8 through 11, Calvo will participate in rehearsals, chair tryouts and a performance.
