Last week, incumbent At-large Councilman Dwayne Ariola filed his paperwork to run for another term this May. He now has an opponent for the election.

On Thursday, Janetta McCoy, former owner of the Pecan Manor Bed & Breakfast and vice chair of the city’s public arts advisory board, filed her paperwork to challenge Ariola, who has held the position since May 2017.

McCoy, a retired professor with a Ph.D. and a background in architecture, design and planning, also serves as chair of the Music on Main Concert series and is on the Taylor Comprehensive Planning Committee, among other efforts.

McCoy said she would focus her candidacy on maintaining the cultural history and economic vitality of Taylor in the face of significant growth and change.

“The long-predicted and inevitable change has come to Taylor,” she said. “With visionary leadership, Taylor can prosper and benefit from the new economic opportunities. While additional revenues will allow us to rebuild our infrastructure and improve our city services, it is essential that we also maintain the culture and character of our historic community.”

McCoy said she plans to work to protect residents from escalating housing costs.

“I will work hard every single day to find creative affordability solutions for homeowners, renters, and small businesses. I am incredibly optimistic about the future of Taylor, and I look forward to having a community conversation about how we grow together.”
