Sometimes we’re so busy chasing all the things we haven’t got that we forget to notice the things we already have, the people in our lives and the fortunate circumstances in which we live.
One day, a professor entered his classroom and told the class to prepare for an exam. He handed out the exams, face down on each desk Once all the papers were handed out, he told the students to turn the papers over.
To their surprise, the only thing on the paper was a black dot right in the center of the paper. Then, the professor told the class, “I want you to write about what you see there on your paper.” The students seemed to be confused but started on their task.
At the end of the class, the professor gathered the papers and began to read each one of them out loud in front of the class. Every paper, with no exception, defined the black dot. It’s positioned on the paper, or how dark the dot was and so on. But each paper described the black dot. After all had been read, the professor continued.
“Today, I just wanted to give you something to think about. No one wrote about the white left your paper. All of you focused on the little black dot,” he said. “The same thing happens in our lives. We insist on focusing only on the black dot – our health issues, lack of money, our job, relationship with a family member or a disappointment from a friend. These dark spots are so small when we compare them to all the blessings in our lives, but we let the dark dots take over our entire mind.”
Always remember there is goodness everywhere and kindness matters.
