Run for the Roses this Saturday

It may be January, but the blossoms of spring and summer are already on people’s minds. The Taylor Run for the Roses 5K/10K, sponsored by the Taylor Garden Club, will be held at 8 a.m.

It may be January, but the blossoms of spring and summer are already on people’s minds.

The Taylor Run for the Roses 5K/10K, sponsored by the Taylor Garden Club, will be held at 8 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 21 at Murphy Park.

According to race organizers, for a dozen years, this event has been a major source of fundraising for horticulture scholarships for local graduating seniors, as well as landscaping projects in Murphy and Bull Branch parks, and beyond.

“We are a very active group of people,” said Penny Rychetsky, a race organizer. “You will see the plants change out periodically and different flowers added and changed out by the season. The race is a way for us to earn enough to take care of those items.”

Each year, the race draws people from all over Texas and other states as well, Rychetsky said.

“This isn’t just a local run for people,” she said. “It’s people coming in from all over the area, and across different states to do this run, and the reason people like it is because it’s through the park system, and there are a couple of places that cross for traffic, but other than that they just really love the course.”
