The St. Mary’s Rams defeated the Sterling Classical Soldiers (Leander) by a score of 34-33 to secure their first win of the season.

The game started with both teams giving their best, which set the tone for the rest of the game.

Before gaining an edge late, the Rams were in a battle against the Soldiers. With each team trading blows in the first quarter, the fans might have expected this game to come down to the wire. With each basket that was scored by either team, the fans got louder and louder as they tried to will their respective team to victory.

The second quarter was much of the same, with neither team giving an inch to the other. As soon as it seemed like one of the teams would pull away, the other even up the score.

With a close score at halftime the fans got one final chance to breath before the final chapters of this game. The Rams came out in the second half with a new found focus and will to win.

Rams’ sophomores Tyler Zimmerhanzel and Brady Altman along with senior Andrew Flores had a big second half. Zimmerhanzel led the pack with nine points in the game with Altman and Flores each scoring eight points.

In addition to his dominate second half, Flores also posted a perfect 100% shooting percentage for the game. Those three players came up huge for the Rams in the fourth quarter and helped give the Rams just enough of an edge to be victorious when the final buzzer sounded.

With their first win under their belt the Rams look to improve their record to 2-2 Tuesday, Jan. 17, when they play the Grace Academy Griffins in their home court.
