When Stevie Widders needed help, she knew she could count on her sister Kaitlyn Billings.
Widders and Billings both serve as Animal Control Officers, but in different cities, Billings in Taylor and Widders in Navasota. With the winter storm approaching, the sisters knew animals in both shelters needed to be warm.
(Widders) asked for help because of ... cold snap, and they don’t have as many supplies, and we fortunately had a surplus,” said Susan Davis, lead kennel tech in Taylor. “We are letting them take it so they can have it for their dogs.”
The Taylor shelter is donating blankets, towels, heat lamps, dog houses, straw and other items to help the Navasota shelter.
“Our community is amazing, and anytime we ask for help or support or supplies, they come through in a big way,” Davis said. “We are able to funnel that out into other communities that may not have as much help or may not know there is a need for more supplies.”
Davis said aside from the items being sent to Navasota, that community will have an opportunity to learn from Taylor with the growth of the shelter.
“They are going to be able to watch how our shelter, which started out similar to theirs, has had such community support over the last five years, and how we’re finally getting it to turn into an actual working purposeful shelter,” Davis said. “We will definitely help them in any way we can for them to get that for their community.”
