A big second quarter helped the Thrall Tigerettes (12-7) roll over the Luling Eagles (1-14) Tuesday night. The Tigerettes outscored the Lady Eagles 20-1 in the second and blew open a close game for the win.
Thrall jumped out to a 14-4 lead in the first quarter, primarily due to a swarming defense that converted multiple Luling turnovers into points. Neveah Irvin, who led all scorers with 13 points, scored six in the opening period for the Tigerettes. Luling made a late run over the final 2:45 of the quarter to trim the lead to 14-9, but that would be as close as they would get.
Irvin added seven points to her total in the second period, while Kinley Hoffman scored five, including a shot from behind the three-point arch. Thrall lead 34-10 at the break.
The Tigerettes’ defense continued to dominate Luling in the second half. Thrall held the Lady Eagles to just four points in the third stanza. Meanwhile, at the offensive end, Miranda Richter dumped in a pair of baskets that helped the Tigerettes to a 12-4 scoring advantage in the period.
The Tigerettes led 46-14 after three quarters of play.
Luling’s offense was finally able to solve the Thrall defense in the fourth period, outscoring the Tigerettes 9-6, but it was a case of too little, too late. Janeese Flowers led the Eagles with 10 points. Meanwhile, the Tigerettes continued enjoying a balanced scoring attack. Besides Irvin’s 13, Richter finished with eight points and Hoffman had seven. Irvin and Richter also pulled down six rebounds each.
Thrall opened District 27-2A play Friday when they hosted the Thorndale Lady Dogs. The Tigerettes were trying to break a 14-game losing streak to the Lady Dogs. The last time Thrall beat Thorndale was February 13, 2015.
