The Automotive Technology Program is highlighted in the December 2022 edition of Hippo Monthly Magazine.

The Automotive Technology Program at Hutto High School provides students the opportunity to learn and apply skills in the automotive industry.

Students begin as sophomores in the Automotive Basics course learning automotive systems such as suspension and steering, maintenance brakes, electrical/electronics, HVAC, engine performance and repair.

Students then move into Automotive Technology I where they begin to service and repair those systems as well as moving into transmissions and vehicle diagnosis. In Automotive Technology II, students apply their skills by moving into more advanced diagnosis and repair.

Students can receive high school credit for serving as interns at local automotive businesses, and we even have a student who is partnered with Hutto ISD Transportation.

Students who graduate from the program can immediately begin a career or pursue further education at a technical college.

They are able to join the Hutto Automotive Skills Students organization and compete against other schools in SkillsUSA. Last year, these students captured five of the top 10 places in a state contest including first, second and third place.

Their instructors Matthew Johnson, Tony Martinez, and Jeff Milam combine over 40 years of industry experience and 35 years of teaching experience.

They believe that all students can master all of the standards. If you ever get to visit their shop, you see competent and knowledgeable students busy in their work. In the 21-22 school year, Hutto High School automotive students earned 222 industry- based certifications in addition to other certifications prized by employers.
