How will development code updates affect my property specifically?

The public will have a chance to have these kinds of questions answered through one-on-one conversations with city staff and consultants at the Coding a Stronger Future: Open House from 1 to 7 p.m. today at the Taylor Public Library, 801 Vance St.

This is a come-and-go open house to review the draft place types zoning map and development standards, city staff said.

“I encourage people to come out to the meetings because I think it will be really informative,” said Tom Yantis, assistant city manager, who will be one of the people on hand to answer questions. “We will have all hands on deck, our planning staff as well as our consultants, so we will have a lot of people there.”

Last fall, the city adopted the Envision Taylor Comprehensive Plan to create a whole new set of land use categories for the city based on community input for how the city should grow because development codes were not producing development patterns that matched Taylor’s historic neighborhoods, according to city documents.

“We created market centers and employment centers and neighborhood land use categories,” Yantis said. “And now what we are doing is actually putting in place zoning districts to implement all of those different land use categories.” Tom Yantis said this was an exciting opportunity for community members to see the plan implemented into action.

“This will probably be the first time in the city’s history where we will have zoning districts that achieve the goals that were outlined in the land use plan in the comprehensive plan,” Yantis said. “We went through the process and said, ‘Hey this is how we want the city to look, and what you have to have in place to make sure that it looks that way are the actual development regulations through the zoning ordinance that achieve those goals, the first time that I know of in Taylor’s history.”
