The Hutto Hippos won their first district game of the season on homecoming night in dominating fashion.

The Hippos defeated the Copperas Cove Bulldawgs 49-31 Friday night at Hutto Memorial Stadium.

The Hippos were firing on all cylinders as all three phases of the game for the Hippos executed perfectly.

“We still have some things to clean up, but I am very proud of our coaches and our players for how they came out and competed tonight,” Hutto head coach Will Compton said. Compton said his team played a complete team game Friday night. He said the defense was flying all over the field and the offense didn’t force anything and made big plays when they needed it.

Hippos junior quarterback Will Hammond had an extraordinary night throwing the football carving up Copperas Cove’s defense.

“We started out a little slow on offense, but then we burst to score 28 points in the second quarter,” Compton said. “We were kind of feeling each other out those first couple of series, but once we got a beat on them, our coaches did a great job of dialing up what works.”

The efficiency on both sides of the ball led to the Hippos having a 28-3 lead at halftime and they continued to build on that momentum. The Hippos held a 49-16 lead before allowing their backup players to play. Copperas Cove took advantage scoring two touchdowns and recovering an onside kick.

This was the Hippos first district win of the season which keeps them in the hunt for a playoff spot. Compton said every game for the rest of the season is a playoff game for his team.

“Every game is playoffs for us. We have to have the mentality of ‘we can’t lose another game’ because we can’t lose again if we want to make playoffs,” Compton said.

The Hippos season and playoff hunt continues next Friday, Oct. 28, when they go on the road to take on the Bryan Vikings.
