Thrall and Granger cross country dominate district championship

The cross-country teams for Thrall and Granger combined for a total of eight top-10 finishers, six top five finishers and two first place finishers at the District Championship meet Monday. Thrall sophomore Sarah Beth Laurence and Granger senior Cobe Whitney both claimed first place in the varsity girls twomile run and varsity boys 5,000 meter run respectively. Laurence finished her race in 12 minutes and 43 seconds, a good 12 seconds in front of the second- place finisher.

The cross-country teams for Thrall and Granger combined for a total of eight top-10 finishers, six top five finishers and two first place finishers at the District Championship meet Monday. Thrall sophomore Sarah Beth Laurence and Granger senior Cobe Whitney both claimed first place in the varsity girls twomile run and varsity boys 5,000 meter run respectively. Laurence finished her race in 12 minutes and 43 seconds, a good 12 seconds in front of the second- place finisher.

Whitney finished his race in 18 minutes and 46 seconds, which was 50 seconds faster than the second-place finisher.

Closely following Laurence in the varsity girls’ race was senior teammate Kennedy Yanez who finished in 3rd place with a time of 14 minutes and 17 seconds. A second behind Yanez was Granger senior Elizabeth Martinez in 4th place finishing with a time of 14 minutes and 18 seconds.

Thrall was not done in the varsity girls race though, junior Avery Koonce finished just six seconds behind Martinez • page 5

6th place with a time of 14 minutes and 24 seconds.

In the varsity boys race Thrall junior Steven Flournoy-Walker was a minute behind Whitney finishing in 4th place with a time of 19 minutes and 45 seconds. Two seconds behind Flournoy-Walker was another Granger senior Travis Burton who finished the race in 19 minutes and 47 seconds.

Thrall, again, was not done with top 10 finishers as Aurelio Garza finished in 7th place in the varsity boys 5000-meter run with a time of 20 minutes and 10 seconds.

Thrall also had a 1st place finisher in the junior varsity twomile girls race Monday at the District 27 Championship meet. Thrall sophomore Kassandra Jackson finished in 1st place with a time of 16 minutes and two seconds.
