COUPLAND CIVIC ORGANIZATION (CCO)

Coupland resident Debrah Candelas will speak to the CCO for the September meeting. Earlier this year Candelas traveled to Ukraine where she and her partner Jeff Teasdale delivered supplies and brought disabled Ukrainians to safety. She is also sponsoring a Ukrainian woman and her son.

The meeting will be on Monday, Sept. 26, in the fellowship hall of St. Peter’s Church of Coupland. Come at 6:30 p.m. for a spaghetti supper hosted by the CCO.

The program will begin at 7 p.m. On Sunday, Oct. 2, the CCO will host the annual Choo Choo Fest in the fellowship hall and on the grounds of St. Peter’s Church of Coupland. As always, there will be a delicious barbecue meal of sausage, pork loin and chicken drumsticks prepared by Coupland’s Master Chef Peter Wabbel. The sides of beans, potato salad and slaw will be homemade by CCO board members. Tickets for the meal are $15 for adults and $7 for children eight and under. Serving starts at 11:30 a.m. and ends when sold out. Buy your tickets in advance from any CCO board member or call Susan Schmidt, 512-818-0648; Barbara Piper, 512-856-2635; Becky Sutton, 512-2698571; or Judy Downing, 512-293-0501. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door.

A bake sale will feature all kinds of desserts and baked goods from the famous Coupland cooks and bakers. A silent auction will showcase a variety of items— antiques, collectibles, arts and crafts, toys and fine art.

It wouldn’t be Choo Choo Fest without a choo choo, and we welcome back JC Callis and his family with their Kiddie Express train. The kiddies and their parents enjoy free rides through Coupland. Come enjoy a Coupland tradition and a fun family event at Choo Choo Fest.

There will be a special CCO meeting on Monday, October 10, because of the November election.

Three places on the Coupland City Council are up for election, and the candidates will speak to the community. Also, school Superintendent Tammy Brinkman will address the needs of the school and the bond proposal that will be on the ballot. There will be a sandwich supper at 6:30 p.m., and the program will start at 7 p.m.

On Sunday, Oct. 30, beginning at 5 p.m., the CCO will host the annual Halloween Trunk or Treat. Residents in costumes will decorate car trunks or the backs of SUVs, park on the street in front of St. Peter’s Church, and hand out treats to the trick or treaters. This is a safe way to trick or treat and is fun for the whole family.

COUPLAND SCHOOL NEWS

The Board of Trustees has called for a bond election to be on the November ballot for $56 million to build facilities to address the growth at the middle school. The student population has already outgrown the recent expansion of the school facilities, and the school has had to bring in a portable building.

This November proposal will not consider a high school; it will address only the middle school needs. Superintendent Tammy Brinkman will address this situation at the Oct. 10 CCO meeting.

ST. PETER’S CHURCH OF COUPLAND

The project of putting new siding on the exterior of St. Peter’s is finished. The church newsletter notes, “Many thanks to Danny Smith for initiating and managing the siding project, to Judy Downing and the Master Planning Committee and others who coordinated the fundraising, to Council President Sharon Kreidel for overseeing the project, and to everyone who contributed funds.”

The historic sanctuary was built in 19051906 when St. Peter’s had 54 member families. The fellowship hall was built in 1925, and the connecting structure was built in 1953.

St. Peter’s had a busy September with the annual garage sale Sept. 10 and the St. Peter’s Diners Sept. 15. The senior luncheon was Sept. 20, bingo and 42 dominoes were played after the homecooked meal. The annual church picnic was back Sept. 25 after a twoyear hiatus. Services were held at the pavilion, followed by hamburgers and hotdogs with all the fixings.

Pastor Charles Stark started a weekly Bible study class Wednesday, Sept. 14, at 10 a.m. in the conference room.

Everyone is welcome On Sunday, Oct. 23, marks the traditional Kirchenfest which recognizes past confirmation graduates. In place of the monthly potluck dinner, a catered meal will be served.

All are welcome at the worship services at 10:15 a.m. on Sundays. For more information, see www.

CouplandChurch. org or email [email protected].

The first Thursday of each month marks the Ladies Bible Study from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the fellowship hall with a light supper followed by Bible study. Those who want to participate do not have to be members of New Sweden Church.

Carisalez reports that on Sept. 26, there will be a church day trip to Schulenburg to visit the painted church and have lunch. New Sweden Church is at 12809 New Sweden Church Road. For information, go to newswedenchurch@ gmail.com and www.newswedenelca. org.
