With the “Hotter Than Blazes” theme, 17 four-member teams hit the links Aug. 27 for the annual Taylor Lions Club Golf Tournament at the Mustang Creek Golf Course. Several teams were sponsored by local businesses including Black Stallion, Bug Master, Citizens National Bank, City National Bank, Edward Jones, Golden Chick and Taylor Auto Credit.

Other teams represented area golfing friends and families.

“This was a fun event with men, women and children on the teams. We had lots of prizes, food and drinks with some side contests to keep things exciting,” said Lion Tom Schneider, event coordinator.

Lion Mark Thompson added, “We had our best team turnout ever. The golf course was in great shape despite the drought. Hats-off to the Mustang Creek Golf Course crew.”

The Williams Team of John Guerrero, Jack Bond, Jesus Fuentes and Scott Williams took home the gross score plaques and prizes with a team score of 52 on the par 70 course. Scores were based upon the “best team ball” rules.

City National Bank’s team of Jim Jirasek, Jim Buzan and Eric Howell took first place net score plaques and prizes. With their handicap, the team shot a 49.

The Shiloh Shanks team won the consolation prize drawing, and the Milliken team received the prize and cheers for “highest team gross score”.

Club president, Shane Polach proclaimed, “I think it was the best golf tournament we ever put on. Everything went as planned, the weather was hot, but we had a nice breeze blowing all morning. Big thanks to our sponsors and everyone that came and played.”

Treasurer Greg Teggeman explained, “While fundraising events are helpful, our sponsors fund most of our service projects each year. One hundred percent of all sponsorships and event profits go to charities.”

With the motto, “We Serve”, Taylor Lions provide local sight related services such as free vision screenings, eyeglasses, and trained leader dogs to those in need. They provide free summer camp for children with special physical needs such as blindness and diabetes.

They offer local college scholarships, and they support regional humanitarian efforts such as food for those in need and for emergency disaster relief.

Taylor Lions are part of the Lions Clubs International organization, over 1.2 million members strong. Taylor Lions meet at noon on Fridays at Sirloin Stockade. Those interested in becoming a sponsor or a member are encouraged to contact a club member or drop in on Fridays.

The City National Bank Team achieved first place net, the lowest total score after applying their team handicap. Team members were Jim Buzan, Eric Howell and Jim Jirasek. Their gross score ranked third overall, but their net score was 49 with their handicap, or 21 below par.
