Cancer survivor commends Taylor ISD

Public comments at school board meetings can sometimes involve complaints or criticism, but Mark Harwell, an automotive and diesel instructor at Taylor High School’s Career and Technical Education program, had nothing but praise for the community of Taylor Independent School District at the Aug. 15 board meeting last week.

“My reason for being here tonight is to compliment the district on how well it has treated me while fighting cancer,” said Harwell, a Granger resident who has been an instructor at Taylor High School for six years.

Harwell said he has been battling cancer since August of 2021.

“The folks from HR, administration, principals, coaches and staff members have shown tremendous support in my recovery efforts,” he said. “From meal trains to advice to helping with personnel concerns, there hasn’t been a day in the last year I haven’t felt supported.

The generosity in this district has truly enlightened me that you guys truly care about Taylor staff members, which makes any teacher feel appreciated. I’m looking forward to meeting all the new staff members and experiencing another amazing year at THS. Again, my sincerest appreciation for all the support during this extremely trying time. My family and I are honored to be part of the Taylor Duck family.”

At the conclusion of Harwell’s statement, Board President Marco Ortiz, encouraged the instructor to keep going.

“Thank you, Mr. Harwell,” Ortiz said. “You have a minute thirty left if you want.”

“So this duck walks into a bar…,” Harwell said with a laugh.
