If you smell smoked meat and other delicious goods from central Taylor next Friday and Saturday, there’s a reason why.
The Taylor International Barbecue Cookoff (TIBC), held since 1978, will be at Murphy Park in Taylor Aug. 19-20. Admission for the public and non-competitors is free. Residents are encouraged to bring their own beverage and enjoy the shading.
“We could not accomplish this event without the help of our sponsors especially the Taylor Lions Foundation,” said the TIBC committee on its Facebook page July 31. “We also thank the city of Taylor Parks and Recreation Department for allowing us to return to our home, Murphy Park. We are just one week away from a 43 yearold Taylor Texas tradition.”
Cooking categories are beef brisket, pork ribs, chicken and Cook’s Choice with optional categories of bean jackpot, margarita and kids grilled cheese. Each category, except Cook’s Choice, must be turned in as barbecued meat unstuffed and unwrapped to be judged. Entries will be judged on taste, appearance and texture on a 1-10 scale. Entrance into an optional category is contingent on entrance into at least one main cooking category.
There will be trophy and prize money for first place, second place, third place, master cook and reserve master cook. A trophy will also go to the best judged rig. Cookoff areas will be 35 feet by 30 feet.
Entry fees are $100 for one or all categories. The bean jackpot, margarita and kids grilled cheese categories have $10 fees.
