The NFL Alumni Association, Taylor ISD, 4th & Goal Athletics and The Camp Guys will be in Taylor at the high school football stadium this coming Thursday, July 28, to host an NFL youth football camp from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Signups for the event start at 9 a.m. on Thursday.
“Taylor previously hosted camps three or four times previously. We let COVID-19 get out of the way and decided it was time to bring the camp back,” said Gerald Anderson of the Bill Pickett Educational Foundation that is sponsoring the event.
The NFL camp is for boys and girls ages 7-18 and costs $40.
“The camp will offer scholarships for kids who cannot afford to attend,” said Anderson. “ We don’t want any of our kids to miss out on this opportunity.”
The camp will not focus on position-specific activities, but more on the basics.
“The kids will rotate from station to station so you’re not just focusing on if you’re a receiver or defensive player,” said Anderson. “The stations offer agility and skills. It is more than a football-focused camp. It’s about fine-tuning your skills, technique, and good mechanics.”
The camp is for male and female athletes. All campers will learn about speed, agility, and the basics of 101 football.
At the end of the camp, the campers will participate in either touch or flag football game that will feature campers from all age groups, followed by a meal.
The camp will be presented by former University of Texas athletes Rodrick Walker, Kwame Cavil and Derrick Scott.
Walker is a Texas native. He played running back at Irving Nimitz High School, where after a dynamic high school career he became the no. 2 overall recruit in the country. He went on to play college football at The University of Texas at Austin, helping the Longhorns win two conference titles and leading the team in rushing his senior season. After college, Coach Walker played in the NFL for the Houston Oilers and is now the president of the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) for the San Antonio and Austin chapters.
Cavil played college football at The University of Texas at Austin from 1997 to 1999. In 1999, he set a school single-season record by recording 100 receptions. He played in the NFL for the Buffalo Bills and won a Canadian Football League Grey Cup championship with the Montreal Alouettes in 2005.
After his professional football career, Cavil returned to the University of Texas to complete his studies, earning his bachelor's degree in the spring of 2010.
Scott played tight end for the Texas Longhorns from 1995 to 1998. After graduating in 2000 and receiving a degree in kinesiology, Coach Scott worked two years with the Austin Rattlers semi-professional football team as an assistant coach and head of strength and conditioning. While there, he helped the rattlers win two national championships with a record of 30-0.
Coach Scott was offensive coordinator and head of strength and conditioning for all sports at Reagan High School in Austin. Scott previously worked at Connally High School in Pflugerville.
