Dates with Destiny

Fit to fight and ready to go. As usual Destiny “Too Sweet” Jones is all smiles as she prepares to go into battle in the ring.

Taylor’s doe-eyed boxing beauty Destiny Jones will, at last, be stepping back into the boxing ring later this year.

On Aug. 12, Jones will take on Stephanie Han from El Paso at the Pan American Center in Las Cruces, New Mexico, in a four-round match. Two months later, Jones is scheduled for a fight in San Antonio on Oct. 8 in a six-round bout against Iranda Torres.

For Jones, getting back into the ring has her excited to show the world what she can do.

“I had some promotional issues that are now resolved but during that time, I have been in the gym. It feels great to be back and having scheduled fights that will enhance my future in boxing,” said Jones. “I feel confident that my team will continue to keep me active in the sport.”

Having no fights on her recent calendar has not deterred Jones from staying in shape and ready to go.

“I may have not been scheduled to fight, but I have been in the gym six days a week. In the boxing sport, the trick is to be prepared,” said Jones. “Short notice fights are presented to fighters. The trick is to be ready and stay focused on the mission. The mission is to become a world champion and to do that you always have to ready. No excuses.”

With female boxing still in its infancy, located competition can sometimes be a challenge.

“The problem is that there are not a lot of female fighters. This presents a problem when it comes to looking for an opponent. Females are sometimes forced to change weight classes to present them the opportunities to fight,” said Jones. “Hopefully this will change in the future. Every fighter wants to build a winning record so they can enhance their career. It is a constant chess game in getting a fight and fighting the right person to enhance your career.”

Jones gets back into competition the second week of August after nearly a year long absence.

“Stephanie Han is a good boxer; she moves well and utilizes her boxing skills to win fights. She will be the taller fighter,” said Jones. “However, we will have a gameplan for this fight and we are confident that my experience, speed and power can overcome any obstacles she may bring to the table.”

After a brief recharge, Jones will be back in action in October in San Antonio.

“Different opponents present certain challenges when you prepare for a fight. I was told once by my trainer, ‘There is always somebody bigger, stronger and faster…but who can outlast you.’  Endurance is the key in this game. I will be ready,” said Jones. “I will have a smile on my face because I know I have prepared for battle.”
