TAYLOR CELEBRATES FOURTH OF JULY

Murphy Park was packed this past Monday for a birthday party celebrate across the country.

The American Legion Graham D. Luhn Post 39 hosted its Independence Day celebration and fireworks July 4. The festival included a parade and more throughout the day.

“The American Legion is proud to be a part of this in partnership with the city and with Valero, Livingston Fund and all of our corporate sponsors. We thank them,” said Scott Dean, Post 39 commander.

Festivities began at 9 a.m. with the parade. The route went from Old Taylor High, 410 W Seventh St., headed north on Davis Street, turned right on Lake Drive and then drove into Murphy Park. Stacy Stork served as the parade grand marshal.

Jaecks Family Farm was crowned the parade float grand champion. The Jeep Club was named in first place, followed by A Veteran Storage in second and the Horse Club in third.

An ice cream social, food trucks and watermelon were available afterward at the American Legion hall.

FIRE CLAIMS HOME

A Thursday fire destroyed a home near the northern edge of Taylor.

On June 30, the Taylor Fire Department and others responded to a fire at 11 a.m. in the 6100 block of North Main Street and S.H. 95.

“The single-family (building) had large fire involvement presenting defensive fire conditions upon arrival,” said Assistant Fire Chief Robert Copeland. “The house is considered a total loss from the widespread fire involvement.”

No injuries were reported from the blaze. The cause of the fire remains undetermined.

Taylor firefighters were assisted by fire departments from Round Rock, Georgetown, Pflugerville and Hutto.

GOVERNOR CANDIDATE CAMPAIGN TRAILS THROUGH TAYLOR

On July 4, Taylorites not only celebrated freedom, but had an opportunity to meet possibly the next governor of Texas.

Beto O’Rourke, the Democratic candidate for governor, stopped in Taylor Monday as a part of his campaign trail.

O’Rourke and his son, Henry, had lunch with Mayor Brandt Rydell and his wife Julie, and Mayor Pro Tem Gerald Anderson and his daughter Ne’Koye. During their meal, Rydell and Anderson educated O’Rourke on Taylor’s rich history and the Taylor Duck spirit.

Before leaving to continue campaigning, O’Rourke stopped and talked to a group of supporters and took photos.

AMAZING WOMEN SUNDAY

Dee Dee Washington will present her 12th year of Amazing Women, a program that recognizes four women sharing the challenges that shadowed their lives.

The program will be held Sunday, July 10, at 3:30 p.m. at Jerusalem Pentecostal Church where Daniel Alderete is the pastor.

Sometimes life throws huge challenges our way, whether it’s a deadly illness or having to survive with no job or family to support you. With God’s blessings, with their prayers and the belief they have in themselves, these four women have overcome their challenges.

The 2022 Amazing Women speakers include Audrey Faye Amos-McGehee of Cedar Park, formerly of Taylor; and Elizabeth Stinson of Austin, formerly of Taylor.
