Maria Guadalupe Yannis, 78, of Austin, formerly of Taylor, passed away, surrounded by her loving family, early Friday morning, June 24, 2022. Guadalupe was born Dec. 22, 1943, three days before Christmas, in Taylor to Jovita Flores and Santos Yannis.

Guadalupe never shied away from hard work and sought to find enjoyment and value in everything she did, even working in the cotton fields as a young girl. She was loved and revered by all her children’s friends and all the kids in the neighborhood knew they were always welcomed and had a place to stay.

Guadalupe later volunteered at the Taylor Senior Center’s Food Pantry for many years. Her passion and true enjoyment came from her family. She loved to spend time with her family either dancing, listening to music, making homemade tortillas and just sitting together eating sunflower seeds, peeling pecans, or eating peaches, while listening to stories about their lives. Guadalupe was preceded in death by both her parents; and her sister, Susie Martinez.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her four daughters, Sara Oranday, Margie Garza, Mary Alice Garza and Rosalinda Martinez; her four sons, Frankie Martinez, Henry Yannis, Barbarito Martinez and Eddie Martinez; her two sisters, Bessie Yannis and Tomasa Yannis; and one brother; 31 grandchildren; 63 great grandchildren; six great great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends.

Guadalupe’s warm heart will be miss by everyone who knew and loved her.

Family and friends gathered for visitation Wednesday, June 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. with Recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7 p.m. at Elgin Funeral Home.

A celebration of Christian funeral mass was held Thursday, June 30, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church of Taylor, with Father Alberto J. Borrvel presiding. Christian burial followed at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church Cemetery of Taylor.
