A Thursday fire destroyed half of a home in west Taylor.
On June 16, the Taylor Fire Department rushed to the 500 block of Debus Drive near Thomas Street at 8:38 a.m. for a structure fire. There were no injuries.
“There was one resident in the home when the fire started,” said Fire Chief Daniel Baum. “They were alerted by neighbors about the same time they discovered the fire.”
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but the blaze apparently started in the property’s garage before spreading to the home.
“The garage area of the house was heavily involved with fire when we arrived,” said Baum. “The fire caused damage to approximately 50% of the home.”
Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze within 30 minutes. Heat from the fire as well as weather also proved a challenge.
“It was already 82 degrees when the fire started,” said Baum. “The bunker gear worn by firefighters causes a great deal of heat stress, and firefighters can only work for short periods of time before having to be relieved when it is this hot outside.”
Taylor firefighters were assisted by the Hutto and Pflugerville fire departments.
