A recent graduate reflects on her time at Taylor High School and looks forward to her next steps in New York City at an Ivy League school, Colombia University.
Samantha McIntyre graduated with numerous honors and a roar of cheering as she walked the stage May 27. McIntyre was the class of 2022 president, captain of the Hi-Stepper team, National Honors Society president and a member of the academic decathlon team. A common ques
A common question for graduates is what their favorite memory of high school was. As a very active member of not only the high school but also the community of Taylor, McIntyre had a unique perspective on her high school years. “Being able to
“Being able to hold conversations and see different viewpoints with everybody and (getting) more knowledge from that was an amazing experience. You can never go wrong with that,” said McIntyre. “I really enjoyed that, which is why I’m so excited to go to New York”
McIntyre met with me the day after graduation amid celebrations of completing high school and preparing for her next steps in The Big Apple.
“It still hasn’t really hit me that I graduated,” said McIntyre “It was a moment to really be proud of. It was a great experience”
Choosing a university to further your education in is hard, but it is especially so when choosing an Ivy League school. At Colombia University, McIntyre is interested in pursuing a degree in economic philosophy and wants to become a corporate lawyer.
“I did a lot of research going into the college application process,” said McIntyre. “I wanted a campus ground that had that tight knit community, which is exactly what Colombia offers.”
Meeting new people and having strong community connections are important to McIntyre, which is why she chose to go to a university located in New York.
“The second you walk outside of Colombia’s gates, you enter this big city filled with diverse people who hold different stories,” said McIntyre “That was something I knew was necessary in my college experience.”
As an upcoming freshman, McIntyre wants to continue being active in her community space and keep an open mind about what is offered on campus.
“I would love to join clubs that are big advocates, especially for human rights [and] student government,” she said.
Eagerness to travel and being independent are attributes McIntyre accredits to her parents, whom she noted are her biggest inspirations.
As a graduate of Taylor Independent School District, McIntyre’s biggest advice to students is to always trust yourself and to not cut yourself short.
