A boy had a scary incident at Taylor’s city pool Saturday afternoon but is recovering this week.
On May 28, shortly before 5 p.m., the male minor was taking a swim in Murphy Park’s pool, the Doris Roznovak Aquatic Center.
“According to the incident report, the young man was swimming in the pool when he went underwater for 10-15 seconds and was bobbing up and down in the water,” said Stacey Osborne, city communications manager. “Lifeguard Sidney Branson jumped into the pool and pulled the young man out.”
She and fellow lifeguard Landon Mikulencak put the boy into a recovery position until emergency medical services arrived. Williamson County EMS and the Taylor Police Department arrived at the scene.
“The young man was taken to Dell Children’s Medical Center in Austin as a precaution for possible water in the lungs,” said Osborne. “On Sunday morning, May 29, the YMCA reported that he was recovering and that the hospital expected him to be released that day. We have not heard any status updates since then.”
Saturday was the Doris Roznovak Aquatic Center’s opening day for 2022 pool season. The facility closed when the incident occurred. The pool was being overseen by YMCA personnel.
“We know that the situation could have been much worse if it wasn’t for the quick response from the lifeguards and the team at the YMCA,” said Osborne. “We want to commend Ms. Branson and Mr. Mikulencak for their professionalism and responsiveness, as well as the entire team at the YMCA, who ensured that the incident was handled calmly and efficiently, and Williamson County EMS for taking care of the young man and ensuring his safety and well-being.”
The pool resumed normal operations on Sunday.
