An annual tradition of saluting the fallen in our military returned in full form Monday.

On May 30, the City of Taylor Memorial Day Salute took place at Liberty Gardens at Murphy Park. The Memorial Day remembrance was the first in-person event of its kind since 2019 due to the previous two year’s salutes being held virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The reason that there is a Memorial Day, the reason that we are gathered here today is to remember those who made our way of life possible,” said Scott Dean, American Legion Graham D. Luhn Post 39 commander, to Monday’s crowd. “We truly are the guardians of our freedom.”

Monday’s salute began with a welcome from Mayor Pro Tem Gerald Anderson and invocation from Pastor George Qualley. Honor guards from the Taylor fire and police departments raised flags and performed a three-volley salute.

Eagle Scout Ben Roberts played “Taps” to conclude the ceremony.

Memorial Day commemorates the men and women who died while in the military service of their country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle. Taylor traditionally observes the holiday with a special ceremony at Murphy Park.

“Memorial Day is not about picnics or parades, and while there’s nothing wrong with enjoying and celebrating our way of life,” said Dean, “Memorial Day is about gratitude and remembrance. It is about honoring the men and women who made it possible for us to gather here in peace.”
