Summer vibes heat up this weekend in Murphy Park when pool gates open and the community salutes the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives for our nation.

The Doris Roznovak Aquatic Center begins pool season in Murphy Park Saturday, May 28. Then on Memorial Day, May 30, the City of Taylor Memorial Day Salute will be 10 a.m. at the park’s Liberty Gardens, 1600 Veterans Drive in Taylor.

Murphy Park’s pool traditionally opens its season Memorial Day weekend. Although the pool is typically closed Mondays, special Memorial Day hours will be noon to 8 p.m.

There is a designated lap lane open during regular business hours. There are single admission fees and pool passes available, which can be purchased at the pool inside the front gates.

Monday’s salute will begin with a welcome from Mayor Pro Tem Gerald Anderson and invocation from Pastor George Qualley. Honor guards from the Taylor fire and police departments will conduct the raising of the flag and perform a threevolley salute. Remarks will be made by Scott Dean, American Legion Graham D. Luhn Post 39 commander. Eagle Scout Ben Roberts will play “Taps” toward the end of the ceremony.

Memorial Day commemorates the men and women who died while in the military service of their country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle. Taylor traditionally observes the holiday with a special ceremony at Murphy Park. The last two years’ salutes were online virtual events due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’re excited to have it back in person this year,” said Kendra Maness, Taylor assistant public information officer.
