Per protocol, a student was removed from a Taylor Independent School District campus for a threatening comment.
On Wednesday, May 25, Taylor Middle School Principal Chelsey sent a letter to families informing them of the incident.
“The safety and security of our students is our top priority and we take every false threat seriously. Today in one of our classes, a student made a threatening comment to the rest of the class.” Michalik-Ellison told the community. “We quickly removed the student from class and student will not be present for the rest of the school year. We will always work to keep you informed and will take every matter seriously.”
Given a sensitive week, the principal advised families to speak with their children about the serious consequences of false threats that take place in person or on social media.
“We will work to make these last two days feel calm and positive,” said Michalik-Ellison prior to the end of the school year that ended Thursday, May 26.
The incident comes on the heels of a Texas school shooting Tuesday, May 24. An 18-year-old, Salvador Ramos, opened fire at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde and reportedly killed at least 19 children and two teachers. The event is considered the worst school shooting since the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, in 2012, which resulted in 26 deaths.
Superintendent Devin Padavil con firmed Wednesday’s action at TMS went as procedure for the situation.
“The student issue is being highlighted in the media as an extreme issue when it is our standard response to these types of concerns,” said Padavil. “Any statement made as a threat to other students is treated in a manner where removal from school is a normal response.”
