Hoops in the park

Midnight basketball has taken on a new name, Basketball in the Park. However, it has the same activities and excitement as before.

Midnight basketball has taken on a new name, Basketball in the Park. However, it has the same activities and excitement as before.

The free program runs from 7 to 9 p.m. at the basketball courts in Fannie Robinson Park. The program is every Tuesday and Thursday beginning June 7.

In its first year, the program went until midnight, but students, volunteers and sponsors were tired from the late-night hour. The end time changed, but the students requested to keep the original name.

As Midnight Basketball, the program ended before midnight, and was an opportunity for students to stay connected when school was closed for the summer. It is a place to meet, eat and enjoy each other’s company.

It also served as a way for community members to connect with students and show them they have support.

After more than 15 years, the program still offers more than basketball. There is also dodgeball, arts and crafts and other activities. Local businesses and organizations provide food for attendees at 8 p.m.
