Animal shelter update Thursday

Upgrades and rising costs for the City of Taylor Animal Shelter will be discussed Thursday with the City Council. On May 26, the council will receive an update on the animal shelter from HDR, the city’s engineering and consulting firm.

Upgrades and rising costs for the City of Taylor Animal Shelter will be discussed Thursday with the City Council.

On May 26, the council will receive an update on the animal shelter from HDR, the city’s engineering and consulting firm. According to Thursday’s agenda packet, the cost for improvements have risen from early estimates of $1.6 million to $2.2 million.

HDR provided the former cost estimate based on architectural and engineering documents for the shelter late last year, which were to renovate and improve the existing structures in poor condition. Around that time, it was determined that new custom modular buildings were a better option than renovations calculated to be more costly.

Since then, costs for the project have risen reportedly due to the increased scope supply chain issues, material demands and modifications to earlier documents, including for the dog kennel.

HDR received two quotes for modular buildings in preparation of updating the latest cost estimate.
